Customized Electronic Personal Dosimeter dosimeter with replaceable batteries

📩 Request:

Sheriff-Coroner Department of Orange County needed a specialized solution for the occasional use of dosimeters without constant recharging of the accumulator. While Polimaster's PM1610 model offered effective in all measurement parameters, weight-size characteristics and usability, the customer required further customization to change the power supply from an accumulator to the popular AA battery. The dosimeter also needed to provide rapid power-up after inserting the battery after the instrument had been stored without power for a long time.

🚧 Challenge:

The re-design of the enclosure and schematic to implement the powering from a single AAA primary battery instead of an embedded rechargeable one. The main challenge was to ensure that re-design would not affect the radiological performance of the instrument, such as angular and energy response and maintain IP rating and electromagnetic compatibility requirements.

🔍 Solution:

Polimaster rapidly re-designed the enclosure and re-developed the original schematic of the PM1610 instrument to implement the possibility of long-time shelf storage required for civil defense use. The redesign has been followed by full-fledged type tests to ensure the inalterability of the metrological, mechanical, electromagnetic and environmental parameters of the original model.

✅ Outcome:

The customized PM1610B-Continuous and Pulse X-Ray and Gamma Radiation Personal Dosimeter met all the requirements of the Sheriff-Coroner Department. It provided rapid power-up after inserting the battery after the instrument had been stored without power for a time. The client was satisfied and continued to buy Polimaster devices for 10 years (not only PM1610B), and Polimaster added another modification of devices in the line of dosimeters.
