Customized PRD with search and measurement capabilities

📩 Request:

With the spread of a new type of device – Personal Radiation Detector and their use by First Line Officers, who are not personnel working with radiation sources but may encounter sources of radioactive radiation during their main work, it became necessary to ensure control of their individual radiation dose. The work of FLO with two devices simultaneously – for searching and for individual dosimetry control is inconvenient to use and organizationally complex. A technical solution was required that combines the functions and capabilities of two different instruments – a PRD for rapid detection of a gamma radiation source and an EPD for monitoring the personal radiation dose.

Instrument featuring two gamma detectors – one for rapid searches and another for precise measurements to ensure radiation safety.

🔍 Solution:

Polimaster, traditionally in its trend of miniaturization of instruments, proposed a solution that combined two different detectors in one device - a search detector based on a CsI(Tl) scintillator and a dosimetric detector based on a Geiger-Muller counter for measurement dose and dose rate gamma radiation in a wide range of up to 1000 R/hr, and, accordingly, the functionality of PRD and EPD. This is how the new Personal Radiation Detector / Dosimeter PM1703MO-1 appeared.

✅ Outcome:

The proposed technical solution – essentially a new modification of the PRD – allowed solving two problems of radiation control carried out by FLO specialists for whom radiation control is an additional function. The new PRD/Dosimeter, developed for the customer ILEAS, became in demand among many other users in the future due to its functionality.
